For most freshmen, simply adjusting to the speed and physicality of high school football is an achievement. For Zayre Thomas, a member of the Class of 2028, it was just the beginning. Lining up at defensive end, Thomas made an immediate impact, earning a starting spot on varsity in his first season, a highlight moment in his young career that he won’t soon forget.
“That was big for me,” Thomas said. “Starting as a freshman showed me that the hard work and determination I put in really paid off.”
That mindset is one of the things that sets Thomas apart. He knows that success doesn’t come easy and credits his influences for keeping him focused on the right path. Coach William Harris has played a huge role in shaping him into the player he is today. “He made me better as a player,” Thomas said. But his biggest inspiration comes from home. “My dad pushed me to keep going. He’s always going to keep it real with me and my brother, and I just look up to him.”
Thomas also points to Coach Monte Yancey as the teacher who has had the greatest impact on him, keeping him in shape both during the season and in the offseason. That consistency, Thomas says, is key to being ready when it’s time to step back on the field.
While he loves the competition of game night, Thomas enjoys practice battles as well, especially against teammate Dillan Hanks, who he says always brings the hits and pushes him to be better. As for the opponent he loves beating most, that honor goes to his brother, Marcus Neal. “He’s always beaten me when we were younger, so it feels good to finally win,” Thomas said with a grin.
Thomas makes sure to give credit where it’s due, pointing out that the football managers are among the least appreciated but most important members of the team. “They do a lot for us and make sure we have water. I feel like they don’t get enough appreciation,” he said.
Away from the field, Thomas stays locked in on football. He doesn’t join other clubs, preferring to devote his time and energy to the sport he loves. Before games, he turns to Rod Wave for motivation, and when it comes to balancing school and athletics, his secret is simple but essential: “Lots of sleep. Without proper rest, I wouldn’t be able to function properly.”
