For Carthage High School senior Camden Campbell, swimming isn’t just a sport — it’s a way of life that began nearly a decade ago. “I started swimming for the local YMCA team nine years ago,” Campbell said. “I wanted to start swimming so that I could swim with my close friends who were already in the sport.” That decision led to a lifelong passion that now defines much of his high school experience.
When it came time to join the Carthage swim program, there was no hesitation. “I wanted to swim for CHS because of my love and devotion to the sport,” he said. That devotion has paid off, making Campbell a three-time letterman and a key contributor to several conference championship teams.
While many athletes have role models they look up to, Campbell takes a different approach. “I don’t really have any role models in the sport,” he said. “I just want to go out each day to improve myself.” That personal accountability and focus have shaped him into the swimmer and leader he is today.
Training is a major part of his routine — and so is the team camaraderie that comes with it. “We have practiced every day after school,” Campbell said. “Friday mornings we start practice at 5:30 AM. After morning practice, we go to breakfast as a team.” Those early mornings build not only endurance, but also strong bonds between teammates.
His favorite event is one of the toughest on the program. “I swim the 500-freestyle race” Campbell said. “It is a long race. I put a lot of yards in during practice to get myself ready for the race.” He thrives on the challenge and the satisfaction that follows. “It is a challenging race and is very rewarding once you get done, knowing that you accomplished a long race.”
Beyond the pool, Campbell enjoys life outdoors. “Spending time with my friends and family, I enjoy hunting and fishing throughout the year,” he said. After graduation, he plans to attend Crowder College and continue swimming recreationally. “It is great conditioning,” he added.
For Campbell, the goal remains simple: “I just want myself and my team to get better each race.”
