Jordan Black has become one of the key leaders at Westran High School, using a simple but powerful motivation: winning. The 11th-grade guard and football player has built a reputation as a competitor who wants to keep raising the standard every time he steps on the court or field.
Black’s latest basketball season gave him plenty to point to. He helped Westran win a district title while averaging 18 points, 8.5 assists and 3 steals in district play, and he also earned first-team all-conference and first-team all-district recognition.
He says his drive comes from wanting to be better every day, and from the people who helped shape him. His father and brother have been major influences, pushing him to keep chasing improvement and to measure himself against the best version of his own family standard.
“I look up to my dad and brother because I strive to be better than them both.”
That competitive fire also shows up in how he views the responsibility of representing Westran. Black understands that wearing the school name means more than putting up numbers; it means being someone younger athletes can watch and follow.
“Im proud to be a role model for the younger generation.”
When the season gets hard, Black says the support in the stands helps him keep going. Knowing people show up for him and his teammates gives him another reason to push through pressure and fatigue.
“For the fans in the stands that come and support at all the games.”
He also credits his coach for helping bring out his potential, even when the process gets tough. Black said his coach challenges him constantly because he sees what he can become, and that pressure has helped shape his development as a player.
“He pushes me to my limit even if it takes yelling at me because he knows the potential i have.”
Family support has been another major part of Black’s journey. He said his family shows up for him consistently, from home games to long travel days, and that level of support has helped keep him grounded and motivated.
“My family is my number one support. They talk me up every game and come to every game no matter the distance along with traveling to travel basketball.”
Black’s story is built on the kind of attitude coaches love: work hard, compete hard and keep chasing more. With another year left in high school, he has already established himself as a player who values winning, leadership and the responsibility that comes with being a visible part of the Westran program.
