Brunswick’s Lavon Brown Jr. – I-70 Area Fan’s Choice Mr. Basketball – Presented by Shelter Insurance

Lavon Brown Jr. has spent his entire life building toward moments like this.

A senior at Brunswick High School, Brown has become a name synonymous with consistency, leadership, and relentless drive. A three-sport athlete competing in basketball, track, and baseball, he’s not just versatile, he’s committed to mastering everything he touches. But it’s on the basketball court where his legacy has taken its strongest shape.

For Brown, the motivation has always been internal, fueled by a standard he refuses to lower.

“What motivates me is I want to be the best at what I do, and if I’m not, then I will work hard enough to get to where I want to be.”

That mindset helped power him through a historic senior season. After years of chasing a goal that always seemed just out of reach, Brown and his teammates finally broke through, reaching the state championship game for the first time in school history. Along the way, he added another milestone, scoring his 1,000th career point.

“That I have been working on making it to state for four years, and that we finally did it my senior year and that it was the first time in school history that we made it to the state championship and that I hit my 1000 career points.”

His success didn’t happen in isolation. Brown’s journey has been shaped by the people around him, especially his family. Growing up in a household with strong athletic roots gave him both inspiration and a clear standard to chase.

“My biggest role model is probably all of my family members who played sports because I want to get where they got in their careers or better.”

That influence is especially evident in his relationship with his father, who has played a hands-on role in his development. Countless hours in the gym, late nights putting up shots, those moments built not only his skillset but also his resilience.

“My family has supported me along the way by being there for me whenever I need them, and my dad and I in the gym every night putting up shots and working on my game.”

When pressure mounts, Brown leans on that foundation. Whether it’s the expectations of his team or the lessons instilled by his father, he’s learned how to respond when adversity hits.

“What motivates me to keep pushing when things get tough is knowing that everyone is counting on me and just the thought of me letting them down is what keeps me going and also my dad because he has been a very big role on who I am as a player because he taught me everything i know about basketball and he always tells me when things get tough to find a way.”

Brown’s style of play reflects both his personality and his influences. While he doesn’t model himself after just one player, there’s a clear nod to one of the game’s most creative guards.

“I wouldn’t say I model my game after anyone, but my favorite player had always been Kyrie Irving so i guess u could say I model my game after him because I love handling the ball and driving to the rim and also making flashy passes.”

Beyond stats and highlights, what sets Brown apart is what it means for him to wear Brunswick across his chest. This isn’t just where he plays, it’s home.

“For me to represent my school means the world because I grew up here, and for everyone to be proud of what I helped our program accomplish feels amazing.”

Now, as his high school career comes to a close, Brown leaves behind more than records and accolades. He leaves a standard, one built on effort, loyalty, and the belief that hard work eventually pays off.
